If you are wondering about the helmet, I'll admit I did not play football
during my 4 years at Florida State University, graduating in May of 1956.
FSU did give me an athletic scholarship, but, it came from the swimming team . . . I just could not
find a graphic picturing a springboard diver which was my event. Born (4/3/34) on the far north
side of Chicago, the Palm Beach, FL. area became my home in the spring of 1948. At Lake
Worth High School I managed to slip in as an honor's graduate. That, with a
State HS Diving Championship my senior year and the resulting high school All-American status brought
FSU's swim team coach, Bim Stults, into my life. My retired High School coach Buddy Goodell,
introduced us and Tallahassee became my home for four years. |
The diving in the old 'Montgomery Women's Gym' 7 1/2 foot deep pool was difficult. Though better than most
(lots of dual meet wins and NEVER LOST TO uf ), I was not as good as the
best. Still, I did manage an AAU Jr National Championship off the 1-meter board beating a Hurricane
diver who would become an alternate member of the U.S. Olympic team on the 3-meter boards. One of
the dearest men I have ever known, the legendary sports editor of 'The Tallahassee
Democratic', Bill McGrotha had predicted more, but is was not to be. His encouragement, which so many FSU
athletes have experienced, was a motivation which has influenced me since. |
A fun thing to do over the last several years has been the researching of my ancestry.
At the time of my 63rd birthday, a sort of surprise dinner party with close friends brought out the embarrassing
fact that I did not really know anything about my grandparents, all but one of whom had died long before I was
born. I also felt saddened that I knew practically nothing about things like aunt's
and uncle's and cousins and such. And so, in 1997, I developed a simple on-line
Stuke Family Genealogy site , and, an on-line
Stuke Family Photo Album |
Since that time, I have discovered over 900 family members and offspring. Of enormous help has
been my first cousin Leone EWER Rouse, who lives in Safety Harbor, FL and 2nd cousin, once removed, Karen Judith STUKE Penewitt who lives in Dallas.
Many others have also helped by filling in date corrections, birth places, and wedding info among other facts.
The most recent update was done in February of 2007. The number of family units is
370 with 972 individuals. If you see missing info, please send it to me. If you see a familiar Surname,
E-Mail me and lets explore. |
In November, 2005, I was asked to join the FSU Class of 1956 50th year reunion committee.
The project quickly took on a life of its own ... a labor of love and fun.
First was to design a web site, STILL..Better Than Ever,
then, calling classmates, hunting for "lost" classmates, helping plan the
activities. An enormous success, there is now great encouragement to do it
again next year. We will see......
More, at some later date! |
